Restylane Q&A

  • The Restylane family of injectable, gel-based fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid particles. Hyaluronic acid particles are a biological component of the second layer of skin, called the dermis. This naturally occurring substance contributes to skin firmness, structure, and volume so its abundance in young skin comes as no surprise. Unfortunately, as the effects of aging and our environment take their toll, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases. When hyaluronic acid is injected into the skin, it holds onto water in the areas it is placed, which results in a natural plumping of the skin in treated areas and a visible reduction of facial lines, wrinkles, and folds.

  • Similar to Juvederm, this versatile filler can be used to treat a variety of common age-related and other concerns such as:

    • Thin lips

    • Vertical lip lines

    • “Parentheses” and downturned corners of the mouth

    • Deep nasolabial folds (depressions on the sides of the mouth)

    • Crow’s feet and superficial forehead lines

    • Loss of facial volume – ex. cheeks, chin

    • Surgical, traumatic, and acne scarring

    • Tear troughs (under eye hollows)

Of note, Restylane tends to attract less water than Juvederm® and for this reason, many physicians, including Dr. Colaço prefer it exclusively for rejuvenation in the eye area.

  • • Restylane L (tear troughs, facial lines and folds)

    • Restylane Contour (mid face volume, facial lines and folds)

    • Restylane Kysse (natural lip augmentation, hydration)

    • Restylane Lyft (lift and natural augmentation of cheeks, chin, and temples)

    • Restylane Refyne (lines and folds around the mouth)

    • Restylane Defyne (augmentation of chin, jawline)

    • Restylane Silk (natural lip augmentation, hydration, vertical lip lines)

  • Restylane fillers are gradually broken down in the skin over an average of 6-12 months, with the exception of Restylane Lyft which can last up to 18 months. Restylane Lyft, therefore, is an excellent, cost-effective option for long-lasting lift and volume restoration. Individual results may vary.

  • All of the Restylane fillers are already formulated with lidocaine to make the injection experience more comfortable. Ice packs, prescription-strength numbing cream, and/or nerve blocks are also available to decrease discomfort. Hyaluronic acid fillers have an excellent safety record in the hands of experienced, well-trained physicians. A benefit of using hyaluronic acid-based fillers is the availability of hyaluronidase (an anecdote, essentially), which can be injected into the skin and quickly breaks down the product. Most commonly, temporary mild swelling and bruising can occur. Consider reviewing our pre-treatment tips for ways to minimize the risk of bruising prior to your treatment.
