Sculptra Aesthetic Q&A
-
Sculptra Aesthetic is a unique, volumizing filler that provides natural-looking and long-lasting results. It is composed of Poly-L-lactic acid particles which, when injected into the skin, stimulate your body to produce its own natural collagen at the sites of injection. New collagen production starts to take place as soon as three weeks after the procedure and continues to occur for up to several months. Replacing lost collagen in the skin results in a gradual correction of volume loss and decreases the appearance of moderate to severe facial folds due to aging. This often leads to a dramatically smoother, more youthful contour to the face.

Sculptra Aesthetic is a specialized dermal filler that not all practitioners are trained to administer. Dr. Colaço and her medical aesthetics team are highly skilled in using Sculptra Aesthetic. It is not a wrinkle filler, but a bio activator or “volumizer”. It works by stimulating the body to produce new collagen at the sites of injection, thereby replacing lost volume and contours to restore a fuller, more youthful appearance.” Sculptra Aesthetic filler is composed of microparticles that your tissue absorbs over time as you produce new collagen. The results from Sculptra Aesthetic are extremely natural appearing and can last more than two years although individual results may vary.

Sculptra Aesthetic requires a series of treatments (most commonly up to four treatments, 1-2 vials per treatment, spaced 4-6 weeks apart). The visible effects of Sculptra Aesthetic are not immediate like most fillers on the market, and instead occur gradually over the next several months.

We mix Sculptra Aesthetic with lidocaine in order to make the injection experience more comfortable. Ice packs, prescription-strength numbing cream, and injection of a small amount of lidocaine at each of the injection point sites are also available to decrease discomfort. Sculptra Aesthetic has an excellent safety record in the hands of experienced, well-trained physicians. Most commonly, temporary mild swelling and bruising can occur. Consider reviewing our pre-treatment tips for ways to minimize the risk of bruising prior to your treatment. In addition, the risk of temporary, palpable but usually not visible lumps under the skin can be decreased by proper massage of the area which will be demonstrated for you at the time of your procedure. If lumps do occur, they are not permanent and will dissolve spontaneously over a period of weeks to months.
