Micro-cannula (Needle-less) Injections Q&A
-
At ShanthiMD, we use the popular Dermasculpt brand of micro-cannulas. A micro-cannula is a very thin, flexible hollow tube with a smooth, round tip instead of a needle at the end. Instead, we use a pilot needle to make a few entry points (lidocaine, ice, and vibration make this practically painless!) and the cannula does the rest of the job. This means less pain and less risk of bruising during the filler procedure.

Micro-cannula injection technique uses a single entry point for a large area instead of many as occurs with a traditional needle. Because the tip of the cannula is smooth and round, you will likely experience a pressure sensation or a “pinch” instead of sharp pain. There is also less chance of bruising and swelling than with a traditional needle. And most importantly, in several areas of the face, it is much safer to use a cannula than a needle – significantly less risk of inadvertently injecting filler into a blood vessel.

You may experience some swelling, and/or bruising in the area, as with any treatment that requires the introduction of a needle into the skin, however these risks are considerably less with micro-cannula technique. Consider reviewing our pre-treatment tips for steps you can take to minimize bruising prior to your treatment.
